European Recognition for CYTA's contribution to Road Safety at a Conference in France

CYTA is featured in a special publication entitled Best Local Initiatives in Europe thanks to the practical ways in which it has shown its sensitivity to a major problem that affects not only Cyprus but the whole of Europe.

The publication, featuring the 24 best initiatives adopted by some 500 organisations, companies and authorities in all the European countries that have signed the European Road Safety Charter, was presented during a European Conference on Road Safety organised by Laser Europe in the French city of Nantes in August.

Conference participants (including representatives of the European Commission, the World Health Organisation as well as senior officials from the public and private sectors in various European countries that are signatories to the European Road Safety Charter) had committed themselves to contribute through a variety of activities to achieving the common goal of reducing road deaths by 50% by 2010.

The European Conference on Road Safety was held under the auspices of the French Minister of Transport.

CYTA, which signed the European Road Safety Charter in 2004 and has been active in this area since then, was invited by the conference organisers to present its achievements to date. The Organisation was congratulated on this by the representatives of the European Commission and the conference organisers as well as by speakers and other delegates.

It is worth noting that among the main conclusions of the conference was a broad recognition of the need to give greater emphasis to educating mainly young drivers and it is no coincidence that young people will be the target of various events that are being planned by the relevant European and international bodies next spring. These include European Road Safety Day and Global Road Safety Week.

This justifies the policy adopted by CYTA which first provided training to its own staff and then expanded its activities to include the general public and, in particular, young people. During the past two years it has held free specialised seminars for final-year high school students and army conscripts throughout Cyprus in collaboration with the relevant government ministries.
