CYTA CONTINUES ITS ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION CAMPAIGN
LYCEUM SEMINARS COMPLETED
POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM ARMY SEMINARS
CYTA continues to educate
thousands of young people in Cyprus and to cultivate road safety
awareness, thereby honouring its signature to the European Road
Safety Charter by which, in April 2004, the Organisation committed
itself to contributing to the European goal of halving the number of
road fatalities by 2010.
CYTA’s decision to make a substantial contribution to
the endeavours of the whole of Europe and of Cyprus in particular to
do something about the serious problem of road safety was turned
into action, through the organisation of specialist seminars aimed
at army conscripts and at graduating Lyceum and Technical School
students, suitably adapted to each group. It is not by chance that
CYTA has decided to focus on cultivating road safety awareness among
young people in particular, in collaboration with the Ministries of
Defence, Education & Culture, since they represent a significant
percentage of the total number of traffic accident victims in
Cyprus. CYTA’s work on this problem is being promoted on the EU’s
relevant website.
In the context of CYTA’s contribution, seminars were
successfully held for some 8.000 graduating Lyceum and Technical
School students across the island during the academic year
2005-2006, a fact also confirmed by a survey.
At the same
time, CYTA continues to hold seminars on the subject for its own
personnel – among whom traffic accidents have fallen by 50% over the
past two years – and for army conscripts as part of the
Organisation’s contribution which began in 2004 and which has
educated thousands of young people since then. It is worth noting
that, according to statistics announced recently during an event
organised by the Ministry of Defence and the National Guard, the
number of injuries and deaths to soldiers in traffic accidents has
been falling over the past two years. CYTA, which was honoured by
the Minister of Defence at the event for its contribution to the
issue, takes this opportunity to express its pleasure at the
positive messages coming from the army and hopes that its
contribution to the issue of road safety will continue to make a
substantial difference as part of the united effort being made by
the whole of Cyprus to achieve the common European goal.
