CYTA warns Internet users of website "traps"
Downloads may lead to huge phone bills

As part of its policy of protecting its subscribers, CYTA issues a warning to Internet users about certain websites that have recently led to a large number of unsuspecting users receiving huge telephone bills.

The internet scam works when users who visit certain websites, usually those featuring erotic content, are required to download a special "viewer program".  When activated, this program disconnects the user's computer from the local Internet Service Provider in Cyprus while the modem automatically calls international numbers, for which the user is charged.  In some instances, when the user leaves the particular website to visit others, or logs off the Internet but leaves the computer's modem switched on, the software continues to set-up international calls without the user being aware of it.

It should be noted that, in certain instances, such websites do disclose in their "terms" that an international connection will be made.  However, this information is not displayed clearly and users may not be aware of it.

CYTA reminds subscribers that it has no control over, or power of intervention in calls made by Internet users.  Internet users are therefore advised to be cautious and aware of instances such as those outlined above since they alone are responsible for any international calls made from their modem.

CYTA advises Internet users:

  • To read carefully the "terms" of such websites concerning possible international connections.
  • To switch off or disconnect their modem when they are not using the Internet so as to prevent international calls being made without their knowledge.
  • To activate their modem speaker so as to be aware of possible attempts at unsolicited connections.
Finally, subscribers who have dedicated telephone lines for Internet use may, for their own protection, request CYTA to activate the Outgoing International Code Control Barring service (connection fee £5.00).
