Press Release: 29/2003 The 6th Meeting of the TeleForum of TOSS (Telecommunications Operators of Small States) is being hosted by CYTA in Cyprus
The Minister of Communications and Works Mr Kikis Kazamias today opened the 6th Meeting of the TeleForum of TOSS (Telecommunications Operators of Small States), which is being hosted by CYTA in Limassol from May 22-23.
CYTA is an active member of TOSS, which constitutes a platform for Telecommunications Operators of small states to exchange views and discuss matters of mutual interest.
Forty delegates from 16 countries, mainly European, are participating in the meeting. The agenda includes the liberalization of the telecommunications market, regulatory aspects and next generation networks. Furthermore, delegates and suppliers of equipment will present matters of interest to the meeting.
In his address, Mr Kikis Kazamias mentioned that following the recent signing of the EU Accession Treaty in Athens by the President of the Republic, Cyprus will become a full member country on May 1 2004 and, among other things, is committed to the implementation of the telecommunications acquis. This, in itself constitutes a small revolution in the telecommunications sector. The Minister also expressed his satisfaction that over the years CYTA has been adapting and modernizing its operations resulting in its present noteworthy position, comparing favourably with the more technologically advanced operators in the European Union.
In his address CYTA Chairman Mr Stathis Papadakis stressed that small telecommunications organisations face many challenges in the continuously evolving telecommunications environment. They are compelled to adapt to the many and rapid changes taking place in the telecommunications sector and to offer high value services to their customers, at competitive prices, while maintaining profitability.
