New UK area codes The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) wishes to inform its customers and the general public that as from April 22, 2000, new dialling codes will come into force in certain areas of the United Kingdom, one of the main destinations of outgoing telephone traffic from Cyprus. These new codes and numbers for London, Southampton, Portsmouth, Coventry, Cardiff and Northern Ireland, have been operating in parallel with the old ones since June 1, 1999. From April 22, 2000, only the new ones will be valid.
The changes to the area codes and numbers are as follows:
London: from +44 171 ××××××× to +44 20 7××××××× London: from +44 181 ××××××× to +44 20 8××××××× Southampton: from +44 1703 ×××××× to +44 23 80×××××× Portsmouth: from +44 1705 ×××××× to +44 23 92×××××× Coventry: from +44 1203 ×××××× to +44 24 76×××××× Cardiff: from +44 1222 ×××××× to +44 29 20×××××× N. Ireland from +44 1232 ×××××× to +44 28 ××××××××* (The ”+” symbol represents the international prefix, which is “00” for calls from Cyprus.)
Additionally, from April 2001 all numbers for mobile telephones, pagers and personal numbers for the United Kingdom will start with +44 7. This code is already operating in parallel with the old one. Changes are also planned to other codes and numbers, such as premium rate numbers, all of which will be completed by April 2001. Details of the changes can be found on the website www.numberchange.bt.com
For further information, contact CYTA's Overseas Directory Enquiries Service on 194.
* Codes and numbers will be changed for the following counties of Northern Ireland: Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone, as well as for the Belfast district.
