CYTA introduces FR/ATM services on a commercial basis as from August 1st, 2000

The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority, as part of its efforts to provide new upgraded services to its customers, has introduced the FR and ATM services as from August 1st, 2000.

Today, the interest of the business sector is focused on the development of high speed broadband services via which video, text, image and sound can be transferred on a single high-speed digital line.

The FR/ATM network offers this possibility by eliminating the distinction between voice, data and video and by allowing the use of a variety of wideband applications.  Such applications include videoconferencing, telemedicine, distance learning, LAN interconnection, teleworking and fast internet access.

These applications are ideal for customers such as banks, insurance companies, hospitals, travel agencies, industrial units, publishers, advertising agencies, as well as TV and radio stations.

Access to the above services is offered via physical interfaces from the customers’ premises to the FR/ATM network.  The physical interfaces define the access rates, while data transmission is achieved via point to point Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs).

FR access rates offered range from 64kbps to 2Mbps.  Specifically, the access rates offered are 64, 128, 256, 512, 1.024, 1.536 and 2.048 kbps, whereas ATM access rates offered are 2 and 34 Mbps.
